Houston Relief

Dear MMBC Family,

In the wake of the terrible disaster that has come to South Texas due to Hurricane Harvey, I want to communicate to you some ways we as a church family can respond. We will be working with a number of different organizations and ministries so we can put our resources to the best use for the greatest good.

As the flood waters recede and the search and rescue efforts wind down, our opportunities to make a tangible difference will increase. As most of us know firsthand, the damage from flooding will be widespread and the need will be substantial for many months to come.

MMBC is working to establish partnerships with churches in the Houston area. The fastest and most effective way to help is to work through God's people in the affected communities through the local church.

There are a number of ways that each of us can participate in the recovery effort in Houston and the surrounding areas:

Pray: Pray for the families devastated and displaced by Hurricane Harvey. Pray for the Gospel to be brightly displayed as the churches from around the country become the hands and feet of Jesus in this recovery effort.

Give: To give directly, simply write "Houston" on your check or the outside of your envelope, or you can donate online at http://michaelmemorial.org/members/donate click "Disaster Relief".

The Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (SBCDR) teams are organized and operated by the North American Mission Board. They already have teams on site and are continuing to mobilize massive groups of volunteers to make their way into Houston once it is safe. You can help with this effort by simply giving funds to support the immediate recovery effort through SBCDR. Unlike some other organizations that have to pay their workers and coordinators, the SBCDR operates with volunteers and the paid staff is not funded by any donations. So 100% of what is given will go directly to the recovery effort. From your phone you can text SEND RELIEF to 41444 and make an immediate contribution. You can also visit www.namb.net/donations to make an online donation to Send Relief (click on the Send Relief link and enter the amount you want to give).

Samaritan's Purse is one of the most effective relief organizations in the world (as we personally found out after Hurricane Katrina). They are already on the ground in Houston and will be there as long as it takes to get people back on their feet. You can give directly to their Houston relief fund by following this link: https://www.samaritanspurse.org/disaster/hurricane-harvey/ .

Short-Term: There will be short-term projects that we will be participating in over the coming weeks. Our plan is to send short term teams to work and to deliver relief supplies.

Recovery Buckets: These 5 gallon buckets will be filled with necessary supplies for the clean up effort that will begin as soon as flood waters recede. Each bucket will cost approximately $65 to prepare, and our hope is that every home in MMBC will provide 1 bucket for a home in Houston/South Texas. Click here for the document that details what will go into each Recovery Bucket. **Please note that we cannot accept any powdered laundry detergent and all items must be new.** You can participate in this ministry in 3 ways:

  1. You can collect the bucket (with lid) and all the items and bring it to the church for collection and distribution.
  2. You can donate individual items for additional buckets to be put together by our church family.
  3. You can donate funds to help purchase needed items.

We will be taking these recovery buckets to Texas as soon as we can get our first team organized and ready to roll. This will begin the long-term phase of our efforts.
